Come Check out the STAR WARS Fan Film Awards

While the Star Wars Fan Film Awards are held every year, they are not at ComicCon every year.  The years of a Star Wars Celebration, the award ceremony held at that convention instead. The Awards show is often done Friday night separating it from the Eisner Awards and the Masquerade.

For ComicCon, the award ceremony is held in Ballroom 20, which is upstairs, the same location that will also host the Masquerade contest. While Ballroom 20 can hold close to 5,000 people, the ceremony often draws only 2,000 or so people.  The smaller crowds make it easier to get a seat ‘near’ the front or one with good viewing of the overhead screens.

This is also a wonder opportunity to see several Lucas Film executives and some celebrities as the present an award or discuss a Star Wars related project.

The awards are the culmination of years best fan films in the Star Wars universe. These finalist films are often quite humorous and always enjoyable to watch. While you can see the finalists online before the Awards Show, it’s incredible to watch them presented in a room with other fans.  The films are about 5 minutes long and need to meet all of Lucas Films requirements, one of which is ‘good taste’.

Attending the award show also has some hidden benefits.

If you have been walking the convention floor at day, you have a wonderful opportunity to sit for an hour and half.  Ballroom 20 is always good about keeping the water containers full and you can re-hydrate as you enjoy the films.  If you have been cramped panels all day long, now you can find some space and stretch out.

And after the awards show and you leave the convention center, the Gaslamp District is less crowded and if you are taking the trolley home, you are more likely to find a seat.

The Star Wars Awards is one of the things many people skip as they are either exhausted by the day’s activities or in a rush to get to the ‘parties’.  It’s an excellent time to relax and slow down and rest before you head home.
