Mattel Reopens 2012 Subscriptions – Go Figure!

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about how terrible the cancellation policy is for Matty Collector and how the company used to be about providing quality collector items to fans.

The post can be found right here: Matty Collector Customer Service Sucks

Toy Fans,

If you haven’t yet heard the news, the DC Universe Club Infinite Earths subscription is going forward for 2012, with Metron as the oversized club-exclusive figure! We know many of you were bummed you missed the on-sale window and have asked us to reopen the subscriptions. We also heard you when you asked us to offer a subscription for the six MOTUC 30th Anniversary figures. I’m stoked to tell you the answers are yes and yes! Starting Friday, September 16th, you’ll have the chance to purchase subscriptions once more for DC Universe Club Infinite Earths and MOTUC Club Eternia®, plus Voltron® Club Lion Force and the all-new MOTU 30th Anniversary Series*! Here’s a roundup:

Subscription Sale Period
Friday, September 16th at 9 a.m. PT through Monday, October 3rd at 11:59 p.m. PT

Subscription Information
There are no differences between the subscriptions we previously offered and those we’ll sell starting September 16th, and the new MOTU 30th Anniversary Series subscription will operate similarly. Complete product pages will be live soon with all the specifics, but here’s a summary of each. There’s a lot of important information, so please read all the details.

Well, Matty Collector just announced that they are Re-Opening ALL the subscriptions for the 2012 lineup. To some collectors this can be a good thing, but to me and thousands of others this is pure crap. What does this mean? It means that Mattel has shifted their perspective to focus on greed and see how much money the company make and basically shaft the collector. If I pay $20 for a collectors item, I would hope that it would be a “collectible” and not a mass produced figure available to millions of people. There is NO CAP on the amount of subscriptions being produced – there is NO such thing as a collectible figure for the 2012 lineup.

Things were different years ago. I had a subscription to get limited figures. I had the original MOTU He-Man, Skeletor, etc. They sold out immediately and became collectibles. Today figures still do sell out, but then are put on ebay and cost a maximum of $20 or so because there is NO cap on subscriptions.

So if you are a die hard MOTU fan and must get everything as it is released, then join MOTU and spend $30 per figure (including shipping). Or you can simply wait for them to hit ebay and buy them for about $15.

I personally will not support a company that forgets about the collector and  focuses on making an absurd amount of money.

  1. Mattel sucks with their hoverboard prop replica promotion, hinting and joking that they will do real ones in 2015, but get in your order in 2012 for the prop ones, and then coming out and saying, they are just joking.
