A Brilliant New Spin On Art – Found Art NYC Project

I recently got a tweet from Kenn Shinabery asking me to check out his site – I did and was amazed at what he has accomplished and created.

Kenn is the founder and creator of The Found Art NYC Project and his mission is simple yet powerful. He dreamed of having his own art gallery or at least showing off his work among other artists and he found a very innovative and creative way to do this.

New York is a beautiful city and makes a perfect backdrop for taking photos – Kenn takes his artwork and places it all around the city for people to find. Once artwork is found, the person goes online and tracks the frames and can also view other peoples submissions!

About the Project

Just like many artists and photographers I have dreamed about having my own gallery show.  Or at least having one piece displayed in a gallery with other artists.

While walking through Manhattan one day I started to think…  New York City is an amazing place and the perfect backdrop for a gallery.  I began to ponder how I could turn the city into one gallery.  This is when I came up with the Found Art NYC Project.

I thought it could be interesting to put my art in small frames and place them around the city.

The frames would have simple instructions on the back:

1. Take a picture of where you found the art.

2. Email the picture to FoundArtNYC@gmail.com

3. After taking a picture of the frame please leave the frame in a spot where someone else can find it.

4.Watch for your photograph to appear on http://foudnartnyc.wordpress.com

Mission of the Project…

To create an interactive project where viewers produce their own art by photographing the frames as they find them around the city.  As the viewers share their photographs of the frames it creates a story of each individual frame’s travel throughout the city.  The project allows the city to become a virtual gallery for others to enjoy.

Everyone can appreciate art – if you don’t like art, one can appreciate the immense time and effort that went into creating a piece of art.

Here are a few pictures of  the various artwork – Some photos even made their way to the 2011 NYCC
