How To Make Money During Comic Con

Comic con is the mecca of all comic conventions – everyone knows that. Anyone who is interested in comics, pop culture, movies, video games, etc knows about comic con and wants to attend at least once in their lifetime. I’m sure that there are many people who would love to attend each year but simply can’t due to all the acquired costs. Unless you live in San Diego, you can expect to pay anywhere from $800 to upwards of $2,000 for SDCC tickets, hotel, food, attractions, and the most beloved of all – SDCC Exclusives!

I have been buying and selling for years and want to share some of my tips and tricks on how to give yourself some extra spending money. Now we are getting into a very touchy subject for many people. There are people who think buying low and selling high is wrong and feel that these people are horrible. Well I agree with most people. I think it is wrong for someone to buy 100 items of the same thing and jack up the price. I do not think it is wrong for a collector to sell some items for a profit and use that money to add to his collection. I am the second example obviously.  So this leads to the next and most important question – How Does One Make Money During Comic Con?

In the next few paragraphs, I am going to do my best to help explain the ways you can make money at SDCC this year. This is not a guarantee but if followed can make you extra money which would help bring down your overall cost of the trip. In order to begin, you will need to find a niche. That means find something you want to sell – comic books, toys, artwork, etc. For the sake of this article I will focus on what I prefer – SDCC Exclusives.

One of the easiest ways to make money at comic con is with the exclusives. Every year hundreds of different companies make exclusives only available at San Diego – This makes most items an instant collectible, why? People always want to add “exclusive” items to their collections and love the fact that they simply can’t go to their local ToysRUs to buy the item. In order to make some extra cash you will need to follow the steps below.

  • Make a List of the the exclusives you want to purchase – Check out my list of 2012 SDCC Exclusives
  • Look for the “wow” factor – Low production, good detail
  • Find figures for upcoming summer movies – People LOVE a good comic movie (The Avengers) and these types of exclusives could bring in some serious cash
  • Factor in profit verse wait time – Thousands of people want SDCC exclusives but you will have to wait in line. Is it worth waiting in line for 3 hours only to sell something for a $25 profit? To me the answer is no, but you must always factor in the waiting period.
  • List the item soon – SDCC exclusives always sell for the most during SDCC or right after. I would get your exclusive and figure out where you want to sell it at – eBay, Craigslist, Forums, etc.

By following this simple method, you can easily make $100 or more by reselling certain exclusives. Now, this method will work for everyone. If you are not going to SDCC you can still make a good amount of money. Each year there are many manufacturers that actually sell their exclusives online!!! Yes that’s right – with the right amount of work and research you can find exclusives for MSRP online and not spend hours waiting in lines at SDCC. In the past, there have been online SDCC sales from Toys R US, Mattel, and Hasbro.
